The Colonial Athletic Association has named Elon University’s Tyler Seibring ’19 its men’s basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A starting forward on Elon’s team, Seibring has earned a 3.98 GPA as an economics and English double major and claims his first Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor from the conference, which made the announcement April 7. Seibring is the first player from Elon’s men’s basketball program to be selected as CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The conference honors one scholar-athlete in each of its 21 championship sports annually. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25. The winners are selected by a vote of the media relations directors at each CAA institution.

A native of Normal, Illinois, Seibring adds this top honor to his numerous awards earned this season, including his CoSIDA Academic All-America accolade on March 2. He became the program’s eighth player selected for the Academic All-America honor and the first since Drew Spradlin in 2011. Seibring was also awarded a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Men’s Basketball Team for the first time.

Seibring is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society and made the President’s List and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll during his first three semesters at Elon. In addition, Seibring was selected to the All-CAA Second Team and gained a spot on the league’s All-Academic Team. He was twice named the CAA Player of the Week during the 2016-17 season.

Seibring played and started in all 32 games during his sophomore season. He led the Phoenix in scoring with 14.4 points per game and in rebounding with 6.9 rebounds per game, both which ranked in the top-12 in the CAA. The Elon forward shot 47.1 percent from the floor, knocked down 60 three-pointers, and made nearly 40 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. He scored in double figures 23 times and had six games with 20 or more points.
