The Elon community can track the latest progress on the construction of the Schar Center, the university’s new convocation center that’s slated to open in 2018.

A new website launched this week — www.elon.edu/scharcenter — brings together renderings of the 160,000-square-foot facility, a live construction cam tracking progress on the center, the latest news as well as photos from past project milestones.

The website features a construction cam that allows visitors to track progress on the Schar Center.
The 5,400-seat Schar Center will offer the Elon University community a premier gathering space that will serve as a venue for convocations, speakers and major campus events. It will be the new home for Elon’s basketball and volleyball teams, with triple the space of Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, a practice facility with two full courts, club-level seating and high-definition video boards.

Visitors to the Schar Center website can take a look inside and outside the center with fly-through videos offering detailed renderings of the complex. An interactive construction cam allows viewers to scroll back through construction photos and provides a time-lapse feature so viewers can watch the center take shape as crews make progress on the project.

Media galleries and a news page offer access to photos from project milestones such as the groundbreaking for the Schar Center held in October 2016. Site visitors can also learn more about Dwight and Martha Schar, who are among Elon’s most generous donors and whose $13 million in contributions to the university has provided lead funding for the convocation center and the expanded School of Communications.

Rentenbach Constructors Inc. is the general contractor for the project and Witsell, Evans & Rasco serves as lead architect in associate with the sports division of Gensler architect. The Schar Center is scheduled to open in 2018.
