Elon employees honored at Staff Appreciation Day

Six Elon staff members were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the university at a May 26 awards program during the annual staff appreciation celebration in Alumni Gymnasium.   

Six Elon university employees were honored on May 26 for their contributions to the university in the annual awards program in Alumni Gymnasium attended by hundreds of staff members. 

Dana Carnes Pursley, Bill Burress and Doug Purnell were recognized for their service during the annual Staff Appreciation Day awards ceremony. 
​The Phoenix Innovation Award is presented to a member of the Elon staff who has displayed innovation by creating, designing, improving or implementing a new idea or program that benefits the university or our community. The 2017 award was presented to Bill Burress, associate director of study abroad. 

Loretta Ellison, Kelly Elliston and Jeff James were recognized for their service during the annual Staff Appreciation Day awards ceremony. 
​The Phoenix Rising Award is presented to one newer member of the Elon staff who has consistently displayed excellence in pursuit of the Elon Commitment with an engaged mind, inspired leadership and global citizenship. The 2017 award was presented to Dana Carnes Pursley, interim director of the Center for Leadership. 

The Phoenix Community Engagement Award is presented to a member of the Elon staff who has demonstrated exemplary service to the university, local or global community through engagement in volunteer organizations. The award was presented to Doug Purnell, database administrator.

Kelly Elliston, executive assistant to the vice president for university advancement,was named Professional Hourly Staff Member of the Year; Jeff James, chief engineer, was named Administrative Staff Member of the Year; and Loretta Ellison, custodian, was named Physical Plant Staff Member of the Year. 

The 2017 staff day program included entertainment by rePercussion, a comedy drumming duo. 

Three staff members were also recognized on stage for their retirements from the university — Marsha Boone, executive assistant to the vice president of admissions and financial planning; Pam Brumbaugh, director of experiential education; and Linda Springs, administrative assistant for Student Health and Wellness. 

Other staff retiring this year include Deb Bryan, David Burnett, Steve Coleman, Barbara Guy, Steven Hunter, Sue Johnson, Tony Martin, Donna McDowell and Travis White. More information about this year’s staff retirees is available here
