Elon gears up for Family Weekend 2017 — Oct. 6-8

On-site registration event takes place at the Koury Athletic Center on Friday, Oct. 6, from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. - noon for weekend events that include football, tailgating, performances and more. Online registration closed on Oct. 1.

Elon University is preparing to welcome families and friends as they return to campus Oct. 6-8 for Family Weekend 2017. The event-filled weekend features highlights including a home football game against William & Mary and tailgating, opportunities to meet professors, a beam-signing ceremony for the new Sankey Hall, and a university update from Elon President Leo M. Lambert.

The Family Weekend schedule is a tightly packed opportunity for parents and family members to experience Elon University from a unique perspective.  Visit the online schedule of events for more details on all programs. Some programs have sold out and are now full and others require pre-registration, as noted below.

Friday, Oct. 6, 2017

1:30 p.m.
Golf Tournament, Indian Valley Golf Course (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
Hosted by the Phoenix Club, the tournament will be a shotgun start. Entry fee ($65 per person) includes greens fee, cart, beverages and award. Participants should plan to spend most of the afternoon on the golf course. Before signing up, please be sure to check with your student on their Friday afternoon class schedule to avoid potential conflicts.

1:30 p.m.
Space for Jummah Prayer, Numen Lumen Pavilion
The Truitt Center for Religious & Spiritual Life has arranged a space and will provide rugs for Jummah prayer.

2 p.m.
Sustainability Bus Tour
This tour discusses specific sustainability initiatives related to activities at the solar farm and Elon Environmental Center which includes the responsible architecture studio and agricultural farm. Participants depart from and return to the Center for the Arts. 

4 p.m.
Sankey Hall Site Dedication, In front of Inman Admissions Welcome Center
Families are invited to join students, faculty, and staff as the site of the Richard W. Sankey Hall, the newest building of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, is dedicated. A short program celebrating the philanthropy that made this building possible will include remarks by President Leo M. Lambert and Raghu Tadepalli, Dean of Love School of Business, and a ceremonial beam-signing for donors and the community.

4 p.m.
Campus Recreation Hike (At capacity. If you would like a list of local hiking trails, please email familyweekend@elon.edu.)
Pack your sneakers and join Campus Recreation on a hike in beautiful North Carolina.

3 – 7 p.m.
Check-in and Registration, Koury Athletic Center Concourse
Check in and grab your student’s schedule for the faculty meet and greet on Saturday morning, tickets for the football game, tailgate entry and other useful information.

5 p.m.
Overview of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Elon, LaRose Digital Theatre, Koury Business Center
Is your student interested in joining a fraternity or sorority? Come learn about Elon Fraternity & Sorority Life, the community, responsibilities and obligations of membership, and have your recruitment process questions answered.

7:30 p.m.
The Music Department Faculty Concert, Whitley Auditorium
Faculty artists invite Elon families and friends to a mixed program for voice, piano, percussion, wind, brass, and strings. This program has become a much-anticipated Family Weekend event since it began in 1999.

8 p.m.
SUB  and Alpha Phi Alpha Open Mic Night, Irazu, Moseley Center
An open mic night with our amazingly talented students (and maybe even a few families)! You don’t want to miss seeing musicians, comedians, magicians, poets, and other acts take the stage. Light desserts will be provided. 

8 p.m.
SUBCinema, Turner Theatre, Schar Hall
Come and enjoy a family-friendly movie in Turner Theatre! Free popcorn, candy, and soda for family and friends.

10 p.m.
SUBLive – Casino Night, College Street Taphouse
Feeling lucky? Come to the Taphouse for Casino Night! Try your hand at Blackjack, Texas Hold ’Em, or press your luck on Roulette. Cash in your chips for raffle tickets to win prizes!

University Update, McCrary Theatre, Center for the Arts
Dr. Leo M. Lambert, university president, will welcome families and provide a university update.

9:30 – 11:15 a.m.
Faculty Meet and Greet 
Enjoy informal conversations with your student’s professors. Faculty members’ locations are printed on your student’s guide that is available at check-in.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar I, Center for the Arts
Grandparents can choose from two engaging sessions led by Elon faculty members. Seminar descriptions are available at check-in.

10:45 – 11:30 a.m.
For Grandparents: Seminar II, Center for the Arts
Grandparents can choose from two engaging sessions led by Elon faculty members. Seminar descriptions are available at check-in.

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Mini Classes
Recipients of the Daniels-Danieley Excellence in Teaching Award and other distinguished faculty and staff will teach these classes. A full list of session topics, descriptions and locations will be provided at check-in.

For Grandparents: Elon Campus Bus Tour (At capacity. Please email familyweekend@elon.edu to be added to a waitlist.)
Join us for a special campus bus tour just for grandparents. Get an insider’s view of the university and enjoy the beauty of the campus, which is a designated botanical garden and a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. Buses will depart from and return to the Center for the Arts. Golf cart transportation will be available for grandparents from the Center for the Arts to the Family Weekend Tailgate following the conclusion of the tour.

Noon
Dancing in the Landscape, Arts West
Enjoy the Carolina blue sky, beautiful Elon campus and exquisite dancing by the Elon BFA Dance Majors. Students will perform site-specific choreography in, with and around the sculptures located in front of Arts West.

Noon – 2 p.m.
Family Weekend Tailgate (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
Get excited for the football game against William & Mary at the Family Weekend Tailgate! Enjoy a variety of your favorite tailgate foods, lawn games, music, a caricaturist and much more! (Vegetarian and gluten free options are available with online registration pre-orders.) Tickets should be purchased for all family members, including your Elon student. Children tickets may be purchased for children 12 years and younger. Student meal plans are not able to be honored at this event.

2 p.m.
Football Game, Rhodes Stadium (PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED)
Cheer on the Phoenix as they take on fellow Colonial Athletic Association member, the William & Mary Tribe.

5:30 p.m.
Catholic Mass, Elon Community Church
Elon Catholic Campus Ministry invites students and families to Mass. Reception to follow.

6 p.m.
ROCKapella, Whitley Auditorium (At capacity)
You and your family will be in for a treat as Elon’s a capella groups “rock the house!” Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the show. Seats will be released to non-ticket holders 5 minutes before show.

Enjoy a continental breakfast with Leo and Laurie Lambert at Alamance Country Club. Transportation will be provided from McMichael parking lot. The last bus will leave McMichael parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

10:30 a.m.
Sunday Christian Worship, Numen Lumen Pavilion
Open to all members of the community, connect with the chaplains and campus ministers and enjoy coffee and light refreshments beginning at 10:30 am. The ecumenical, non-denominational worship begins at 11:00 a.m.

10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Bagel Brunch, McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center
Relax, nosh and schmooze at our traditional Family Weekend Bagel Brunch! Join Jewish students, families, faculty and staff for bagels and conversation.
