Passover holiday begins March 30

Elon Jewish community will gather on at the Elon Community Church at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate freedom together.

The Jewish holiday of Passover (Pesach), the springtime holiday that celebrates liberation from slavery, begins on March 30.

Pesach commemorates the exodus of the Jews from slavery in Egypt. It is also truly a celebration of freedom for all people from bondage.

The Elon community is celebrating this holiday together with a special meal, our incredible, innovative seder, which will be held at the Elon Community Church on Friday night at 5:30 pm.

You may have heard of a Passover seder, a festive and carefully choreographed meal, in which the haggadah (the story of the exodus from Egypt) is recited, and participants ask questions of one another about the meaning of freedom and the world around us.

Symbolic foods are laid on the table, the most important of which is the matza, the unleavened, cracker-like “bread of affliction.” During Passover, it is forbidden to eat leavened food products (such as bread and pasta), as according to Jewish tradition, when the Israelites were fleeing Egypt, they did not have enough time to wait for bread to rise.

This year, our Elon Hillel seder will held at the Elon Community Church and catered by Mediterranean Deli. The taste of genuine Middle Eastern food will bring us back to Egypt for our retelling of the Passover story, and together, we will mark our annual community journey from slavery to freedom in new and creative ways.

Our seder will be new, fresh and fun with a focus on music, joy, and the impact of female leaders in our lives!

We invite you to please join us on March 30 at 5:30 pm at the Elon Community Church to learn more about Jewish traditions, and to celebrate freedom together! CLICK HERE to reserve your seat today!

If you cannot attend, we wish you all a Chag Sameach! (Happy Holiday). May we all value the freedoms we enjoy, and hope for greater freedom for all.
