The Opioid Epidemic in North Carolina – April 16

The Department of Political Science and Policy Studies and the Department of Public Health Studies invite you to join us for a discussion of how the opioid epidemic is affecting North Carolina. The event is open to the public and will take place on Monday, April 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Lakeside 212. Refreshments will be provided at the event.

Come hear two speakers with deep knowledge of the subject, with time for questions, comments, and conversation after.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Andrew Lamb, vice president of medical affairs for Alamance Regional Medical Center, will share a personal experience with opioids, and in doing so, bring to life the fact that opioid addiction has no boundaries–socioeconomic status, race, gender, ethnicity, and age do not matter when it comes to this epidemic. He will also communicate his perspective as a member of our medical community: the role physicians and medical centers can and should play in the opioid crisis, and the challenges they consistently encounter with respect to this crisis.

Kerri Sigler ’02, owner and attorney at Sigler Law, PLLC and founder and president of the Board at Rising Phoenix, will share her experiences as a public defender in Forsyth County. Her time representing indigent clients inspired her to launch Phoenix Rising in order to re-start the county’s Drug Treatment Court. Sigler will discuss the challenges faced during and after this process, communicating a problem-solving approach to advocacy that extends “beyond angry emojis” and social media posts.
