2019 Fiske Guide to Colleges highlights Elon’s active, experiential learning

The annual college guide features about 300 of the nation’s “best and most interesting” universities.

Elon’s engaged learning programs are the focus of the university’s profile in the 35th edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2019, which goes on sale this month. The annual bestselling college guide profiles about 300 of the nation’s best colleges and universities, offering exclusive academic, social and quality-of-life ratings for each school. Edited by Edward B. Fiske, former education editor for The New York Times, the guide is based on academic ratings, price category, quality of student life on campus and other factors.

The Fiske Guide says Elon “boasts a welcoming environment and a nurturing faculty,” with “strong emphasis on global perspectives and active, experiential learning.” The guide notes that Elon helps students mature intellectually and socially through the five Elon Experiences: study abroad, internships, undergraduate research, service and leadership. Students must complete at least two Experiential Learning Requirements, and one student observed that “I’ve found the critical thinking and reflection that comes from the ELRs to be extremely beneficial for discussing my experiences and strengths in job interviews.”

A student who was surveyed for the publication noted “Elon is not just a place, it’s an experience and a community.” Another wrote that “all schools want students to grow holistically, but Elon is the only one I’ve heard of that actively pursues that goal on many levels.”
