Sponsored by the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, Sunshine Day celebrates openness and transparency in North Carolina government.
Elon University’s School of Communications will host the annual North Carolina Sunshine Day on March 11, 2019, in the Turner Theatre and Snow Family Atrium.
Sunshine Day, a program sponsored by the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, brings together journalists, media companies, attorneys, and the public to celebrate openness and transparency in North Carolina government. The celebration coincides annually with North Carolina Sunshine Week to bring awareness to the importance of open and accountable government in the state.
Ken Eudy, senior adviser to Gov. Roy Cooper, will offer a keynote address on transparency issues related to North Carolina elections, campaign financing and voting infrastructure. During lunch, the N.C. Open Government Coalition will announce the winners of the 5th annual Sunshine Awards acknowledging outstanding achievement in journalism, advocacy and government work related to improving government in North Carolina.
Guests are invited to attend a slate of events on openness and transparency issues facing North Carolina citizens, which are detailed below.

Sunshine Day 2019 Events:
Open Data in Local Government: How municipalities and counties are advancing open data initiatives to promote public access to government documents and data.
Transparency in NC-09: Guests will hear from investigative journalists who have covered the race in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District. Panelists will discuss how open records and meetings laws shaped their investigative work covering allegations of election tampering in the race between Mark Harris and Dan McCready in the 9th District.
Open Records and Meetings Law Training: Attorneys Mike Tadych, Amanda Martin and Jon Buchan will update guests on developments in N.C. access laws.
Sunshine Week Reporting Initiative Project: Tyler Dukes of WRAL will present the results of a collaborative effort of N.C. journalists to investigate how cities are responding to requests for information about settlements of legal claims.
Parking is available at The Oaks parking lot, which is located in the northwest corner of the intersection of Elon Commons Drive and North Williamson Avenue. Parking is approximately one and a half blocks north of the venue in the Elon School of Communications at 123 N. Williamson Ave.
