Elon to honor Gerald Whittington Friday with extra staff holiday

At Staff Appreciation Day in May, President Connie Ledoux Book proclaimed Friday, July 5, 2019, "Gerald Whittington Day" in honor of the long-time Elon leader who his year moved into a new role as senior vice president and special assistant to the president.

This Friday, Elon staff members will enjoy an extra paid holiday, thanks to decades of hard work by longtime Elon leader Gerald Whittington.

Whittington has been a key figure in the growth and success of Elon since his arrival in 1992, and in 2018 was named the national Distinguished Business Officer by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

This year, he concluded his service as senior vice president for business, finance and technology to move into the new role of senior vice president and special assistant to the president, and associate professor.

At Staff Appreciation Day on May 29, President Connie Ledoux Book noted that during his 27 years so far at Elon, Whittington has worked long hours and amassed ample overtime — so much so that the university can offer staff members an extra paid holiday this year.

With that, Book proclaimed Friday, July 5, 2019, as "Gerald Whittington Day" and announced it would be an additional paid holiday this year for all university employees in honor of Whittington and his remarkable contributions during his nearly three decades of service.

To mark the occasion, the university asked staff members from around campus to talk about what Whittington has meant to the university and their professional lives.

On Friday, the Elon community is encouraged to share on social media about how they're spending Gerald Whittington Day and to use the hashtag #ElonGWDay.
