Region prepares for severe weather today

A tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m. tonight for Alamance and Guilford counties and the surrounding region.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh is forecasting the potential for severe weather across much of North Carolina today and tonight.

Late Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Alamance and Guilford counties and the surrounding region until 9 p.m. Conditions remain favorable for the development of strong storms with damaging winds and hail. Please monitor the forecasts and local media for up-to-date developments

In addition to monitoring weather forecasts, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Be sure your settings for E-Alert emergency notifications are updated and current. Information can be found on the E-Alert website, with links to create a new account or get help with an existing account.
  • Review emergency shelter locations for the buildings you use most frequently. Locations for seeking shelter immediately can be found online here.
  • Review emergency posters located near stairwells and exits in each building.

E-Alert is the fastest method we will use to communicate with the university community in the event of severe weather. Email, Today at Elon and university social media accounts are also important sources of official information.

We will continue to monitor weather conditions and will communicate as soon as possible if the threat of severe weather will affect campus operations.
