Emily Elrod, lecturer in mathematics and statistics, was chosen as a 2023 Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) Fellow, a program supported by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Project NExT is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences that focuses on all aspects of an academic career including the teaching and learning of mathematics, scholarship, service and professional activities.

Through the fellowship, Elrod attended three days of pre-conference programming from July 31 to Aug. 2 prior to MAA’s national conference MathFest, held in Tampa, Florida. Project NExT sessions were focused on interactive teaching methods and teaching practices to elevate student voice and diversity in the STEM classroom.

Elrod will meet virtually once a month during the 2023-2024 academic year with her teaching support group, a small group of fellows and a facilitator, to discuss issues, share ideas, and provide ongoing support for improvement. Project NExT fellows also attend the Joint Mathematics Meetings in early 2024 and conclude their year as fellows at MAA MathFest 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
