United for Change: How the United Way tax time program empowers communities and promotes equity

In recent months, volunteers from United Way, including students from the Accounting program at Elon University, have prepared 739 tax returns.

The United Way’s tax assistance program provides free tax preparation services to community members who may find tax services unaffordable. This program targets individuals earning less than $58,000 annually and also caters to senior citizens.

In recent months, volunteers from United Way, including students from the Accounting program at Elon University, have prepared 739 tax returns. These volunteers have collectively contributed 1,213 hours of service. The program has generated refunds totaling $598,205 for Alamance County residents.

Maya Drabczyk ’24 has worked closely with the United Way to help advance its mission “to radically decrease the number of families in poverty by advancing social equity practices that promote social mobility and provide opportunities that build a resilient community.”

“I had the privilege of assisting individuals facing various challenges by providing free tax services, thereby alleviating a significant source of stress in their lives,” Drabczyk said. “The feedback for the tax program has been overwhelmingly positive, with clients expressing sentiments such as, ‘Great service! I appreciate the time and effort, and the fact that I don’t have to worry about it. Thank you very much!’ and ‘I have been here for seven years and I’m very pleased and grateful with all your help and support. Thank you all.’ Additionally, 96.9% of clients selected were extremely happy on the survey after their taxes were completed.”

The United Way’s Tax Time program in Alamance County provides critical financial services to those in need and embodies the organization’s commitment to fostering social equity and resilience within the community. Through the diligent efforts of volunteers, including dedicated Elon students, the program has significantly helped reduce the burden of tax preparation for many.
