CJ Eubanks Fleming appointed Faculty Administrative Fellow

In her new role on the university’s Senior Staff, the current chair of the Department of Human Service Studies will help establish more formal policies, procedures, and practices to support the creation and growth of graduate programs at Elon University.

Elon President Connie Ledoux Book has named an emerging campus leader with an extensive knowledge of experiential education as the university’s next Faculty Administrative Fellow.

Associate Professor CJ Eubanks Fleming, currently chair of the Department of Human Service Studies and associate director of Undergraduate Research, begins her expanded role this fall as a new member of the university’s Senior Staff.

Her two-year appointment as Faculty Administrative Fellow will include a holistic review of the university’s existing approach to graduate education and the development of formal processes for creating new graduate and professional programs.

Fleming will be one of two new members of Senior Staff alongside Melissa Clodfelter, Elon University’s associate vice president for human resources and chief human resources officer. Clodfelter has been with Elon University since February.

Fleming’s responsibilities as Faculty Administrative Fellow will coincide with those of Tony Weaver, associate dean in the School of Communications, who continues his service through the end of 2025 as a Faculty Administrative Fellow focused on the strategic leadership and support for academic and curricular developments at Elon’s National Campus locations.

Fleming is a licensed clinical psychologist with active scholarly interests in help-seeking behavior, intimate relationships, trauma, and student success. A champion of experiential education since joining the Elon faculty in 2016, Fleming frequently co-authors research papers with external collaborators and with undergraduates, and she studies work-integrated learning to improve faculty and student engagement.

Fleming additionally researches the psychology curriculum, with a focus on how to best prepare undergraduate students for applied graduate study in psychology. In her role as the Faculty Fellow for Internships in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as in her role as a seminar leader with the Center for Engaged Learning, she facilitated best practices in internship pedagogy.

She has supervised many internships and research projects and taught global study courses. Fleming blends evidence-based practice with real-world application in all her courses, which have included clinical psychology, adult psychopathology, worldwide wellness, and mental illness in film.

In recognition of her commitment to student success, Fleming received the 2021 Elon College, College of Arts and Sciences, Excellence in Mentoring Award.

Fleming earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and American studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before pursuing her master’s in psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Clark University in Massachusetts.

Elon University’s Faculty Administrative Fellow position was created by President Emeritus Leo M. Lambert in 2004 to involve senior faculty leadership within the Office of the President on issues of strategic importance to the university.
