Professor of Law Enrique Armijo spoke with WFMY, the CBS television affiliate in Greensboro, North Carolina, about First Amendment protections.
Enrique Armijo, professor of law at Elon University, spoke with WFMY about free speech and the protections of the First Amendment following the firing of a Piedmont Triad teacher for comments made about Charlie Kirk.
Armijo, who teaches and researches in areas of the First Amendment, noted that the First Amendment protects speech from government restrictions, but private employers can set their own guidelines.
“The public employer does have the right to manage the workplace,” Armijo told WFMY. “When an employee’s right to free speech bumps up against the employer’s ability to manage the workplace, courts balance those interests to decide which side prevails.”
