Elon Law student Christa Davis receives E-LEEP Grant

Christa Davis, a third year student at Elon Law, was one of 20 students to receive a grant through the U.S. State Department for the Emerging Leaders' Extraction and Environment Program (E-LEEP).

E-LEEP trains young leaders to address social, economic, and environmental challenges involved with the extraction of natural resources around the world. Through the program, Davis and other students from across the country will travel to Ghana in July, participating in lectures, site visits, and projects as part of a joint arrangement through Duquesne University and the University of Ghana. The grant from the U.S. State Department will fully fund the trip.

Davis is interested in environmental law and decided that this program and trip to Ghana would be a chance to learn more about the topic.

“I saw this trip as an opportunity to explore environmental law issues on a global level,” Davis said.

She is also interested in the way E-LEEP approaches environmental issues and how the program will handle the new industry of offshore drilling that has recently developed in Ghana.

Davis thought that she would be a good candidate for the E-LEEP grant because of her interests in environmental law and international environmental issues. She also has prior leadership experience in several student organizations, including Elon Law Democrats, Public Interest Law Society and the Women’s Law Association, for which she served as external relations chair. Davis has also served as a representative for the Student Bar Association.
