Elon Law graduates are advancing innovative national policy to increase U.S. exports, advising the public on health care law through media appearances, marking milestones of service in public interest law, and celebrating recognition as Super Lawyers.
Ryan Stewart a 2009 magna cum laude graduate of Elon Law and attorney with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP is part of a team at his firm working with the Export-Import Import Bank of the United States to develop a Global Credit Express program designed to help small businesses to create jobs and fuel economic growth.
The program will give loans up to $500,000 to small business that export or plan to export goods to foreign markets. The pilot program will provide $100 million in loans and could lead to expansion of the program. Details and a video clip of President Obama touting the program are available here.
Christopher J. Anglin ’11, of the Anglin La Firm, PLLC in Raleigh, N.C., appeared March 1 on North Carolina WPTF Radio to provide analysis of a new Long-Term Care Partnership Program between insurance companies and the State of North Carolina. The program will allow North Carolinians to buy long-term care insurance.
In the hour-long interview, Anglin discussed the legal aspects of the program and impacts the program may have on what is known as Medicaid Spend Down Provisions.
“To qualify for Medicaid long term care, the assets of the individual have to be very low before they are able to qualify for long term care, which can be incredibly expensive,” Anglin said. “With long-term care partnership insurance, people who purchase it will not have to spend down their assets to such a low level to qualify.”
Ryan Ash ‘11 and Jessica Yañez ’11 presented at a February 25 Conference on International Law focusing on War Crimes, Human Rights, and Immigration.
Ash presented an article at the conference titled, “Was Srebrenica Genocide?” in which he examined the definition of genocide expressed by courts and international bodies. Ash practices civil and criminal litigation at Blackburn, Conte Schilling & Click in Richmond, Virginia.
Yañez, an attorney at Chapman Law Firm in Greensboro, N.C., spoke about domestic violence as a human rights violation and grounds for seeking asylum in the U.S.
“Violence is violence,” said Yañez at the conference. “It doesn’t matter if the perpetrator is your husband or a stranger on the street, It is still a form of persecution.”
David Morrow ’10, an attorney with BuckleySandler LLP in Washington, D.C., recently spoke with First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama at a February 21 Obama Victory Fund luncheon. Morrow is a fundraiser with Gen44, the young adult fundraiser arm of the Obama Campaign.
Jason Aycoth ’09 is President of the Elon Law Alumni Association. He recently joined The McAllister Firm, PLLC in High Point, N.C., focusing his practice on state and federal criminal law, workers’ compensation, and personal injury law. Aycoth recently reflected on his prior service as an attorney with the Guilford County Public Defender’s Office.
“For over two years, I had the opportunity to work with the best criminal defense firm in the state and I’ve been beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to serve those in need,” Aycoth said. “The Public Defender’s Office will always be family to me and it’s tough to put into words how much I’m going to miss the people I’ve worked with and my time in and around the office. But just as in John Q, ‘It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.’”
Damon Duncan ’09 and Eric Meredith ’09 were named to the Super Lawyers list of North Carolina Rising Stars 2012. Attorneys under 40 are selected for this recognition through a nomination, survey and research process that emphasizes attorney performance as counsel, co-counsel, or other representation and advocacy in the courtroom. No more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are named to the list.
Duncan is an attorney with Duncan Law, PLLC, with a practice focused on bankruptcy law and workers’ compensation law. He was named one of the North Carolina Bar Association Young Lawyers of the Quarter for April-June 2011.
Currently, Duncan serves as Chair of the Greensboro Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Colloquium Committee, Co-Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division’s New Lawyers in Practice Committee, and Member and CLE Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Council.
Meredith is one of two founding partners of Jetton & Meredith, PLLC in Charlotte, N.C. He focuses his practice in family law. Established in 2009, the firm has been highlighted for its success and growth in the Triad Business Journal, Charlotte Business Journal and South Charlotte Living Magazine.
