Junior accounting major Michael Visconti was a member of the winning team in the 2013 Project Run With It competition held during the Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting Aug. 8-10 in Anaheim, Calif.
The competition, sponsored by Moss Adams LLP, brought together more than 70 Beta Alpha Psi students from multiple chapters to analyze and recommend solutions to problems faced by three real not-for-profit organizations. In teams of four, the students addressed accounting, finance and/or information system issues as they related to the business problems of the participating organizations. The teams presented their recommendations to a panel of judges that included a representative of the not-for-profit organization, a faculty member, and a partner from Moss Adams.
The other students on Visconti’s team were Nick Brazell, Seattle University; Hannah Lin, University of Notre Dame; and Evan O’Keeffe, Bentley University.
Prior to this year, Elon had a student on the winning team in 2009 and 2010 – Todd Cash (2009) and Jennifer Kirts (2010). Elon has participated in the competition each year since 2009.
The Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting also consisted of a community service day, best practices competition, awards ceremony and educational sessions.
Elon students Erica Green ’14, Richard Segal ’15 and Hanna Wentz ’14 presented a concurrent session on innovative methods for recruiting members.
During the awards ceremony, Elon’s Lambda Xi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi was recognized as a Superior Chapter for the 2012-13 year. They were recognized for excelling in the areas of academics, professionalism and leadership.
To achieve Superior status, each chapter member was required to complete at least 12 professional hours and 12 service hours. In addition, the chapter was responsible for completing eight outreach activities, which included conducting presentations at regional and annual Beta Alpha Psi meetings and hosting its annual Meet & Greet event.
“With Elon students active in many organizations on campus, this goal can be quite a challenge to meet each year,” said Patty Cox, faculty advisor and assistant professor of accounting. “Beta Alpha Psi students are very dedicated to their organization and the professions of accounting and finance they are seeking to enter.”
Established in 2007, the chapter has earned Superior status each year since 2008 and earned Gold status in 2011.
Beta Alpha Psi is the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals.
