New student parking regulations for fall semester

The Campus Transportation & Traffic Planning Committee of students, faculty and staff is calling attention to the next implementation phase of its strategic plan to transition to a more pedestrian campus. Starting in the fall of 2005, students who reside in off-campus student residences which are within approximately a ten minute walk to campus will not be allowed to park on campus during the peak class hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

Please see this map for affected areas, which are all directly on or within close proximity to the University shuttle route which runs every 15 minutes from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays. Students in these areas will be issued parking permits at a reduced rate and may park on campus after 5 pm on weekdays and during the weekend. Students residing in campus residence halls will continue to park in their currently assigned lots.

The reason for this change is to move toward a more pedestrian campus to promote student health and environmental responsibility, promote safety, and maintain an aesthetically pleasing campus. There are few places to provide new parking lots in the core of campus, and lots remove green space on campus. The University shuttles run every fifteen minutes to reduce traffic and provide an alternative to walking, skating or cycling.

The committee is comprised of Chuck Gantos (staff), Smith Jackson (staff), Chris Morse (student), Sandy Seidel (professor) and Jeff Stein (staff) and Brian Webb (staff). The committee met with the SGA the past two years and received good feedback and suggestions on the committee’s short and long range plan.

Please email any questions or comments you may have to traffic@elon.edu and the committee members will be happy to respond.
