Pamela M. Kiser, Watts-Thompson Professor in the Department of Human Service Studies, was formally awarded the Distinguished University Professorship at a special investiture ceremony on Oct. 4. The board of trustees conferred the professorship on Kiser last spring, and the special ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate Kiser's contributions to teaching, scholarship and service to the Elon University community.

Former Elon Phoenix football standout receiver Terrell Hudgins will be honored with the retirement of his jersey prior to Elon’s October 2 game against the Samford Bulldogs. The ceremony will take place on the field before the scheduled 1:30 p.m. Family Weekend kickoff.

Family members of Elon students are invited to take part in a variety of events scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 3. Among the highlights are an opportunity to meet with professors, attend engaging mini-classes, attend the Family Weekend picnic and football game, enjoy the special Collage Concert and have Sunday morning coffee at President Lambert's house. Funeral services for first-year student Michelle Pfleger, who died suddenly on Sept. 24, will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Cochran Funeral Home in Hackettstown, NJ, with the burial to follow at the Pequest Union Cemetery, in Great Meadows, N.J. Read this note for details.

Live webcasts of Internet Governance Forum panel appearances by Elon University students Kirsten Bennett, Sam Baranowski and Drew Smith, and by Glenn Scott, associate professor of communications, are being streamed online by the United Nations Sept. 16 and 17.

A documentary journalism team from Elon’s Imagining the Internet Center will be filing reports from the UN-facilitated Global Internet Governance Forum in Vilnius, Lithuania, during the week of Sept. 13-17. IGF annually draws nearly 2,000 participants from government, business, academia, the technology sector and civil society who gather to discuss the issues tied to the new knowledge society being established as the Internet evolves and expands.

Elon will begin upgrades to the Walter C. Latham Park baseball facility following the 2010 baseball season. The improvements are made possible by a group of generous donors led by trustee Dr. Bryan Latham and his wife, Janet, of Miami, who made a $250,000 commitment to fund the work.
