The Elon University alumnus oversaw the production of a full-length film titled “Virginia 12th,” which follows the story of Chris Hurst, a one-time news anchor who was thrust into national headlines when his girlfriend and colleague were murdered during a live news broadcast. The 64-minute documentary charts Hurst’s journey as he campaigns for political office.

Elon University, a Campus Consortium partner of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, hosted an Oct. 24 community lecture featuring Academy Award-winning multimedia journalist Emily Kassie.

The freelance photojournalist based in Washington, D.C., presented a lecture in a class offered by The Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School.

During the two-day trip, 29 students visited with communications professionals and Elon University alumni, receiving a behind-the-scenes look at the operations of several prominent organizations, including CNN, Jackson Spalding and the Atlanta Falcons.

In collaboration with Elon faculty and staff members, 10 students began working on the project in March. The final product was recorded live at the Paramount Theater in Burlington.

Trey Caldwell G’18 collaborated with Gardy Swengbe G’18 and Assistant Professor Doug Kass on separate video projects and both were screened at the metro Atlanta festival in October.

The Elon alumnus and documentary filmmaker was honored on Oct. 18 during the screenings of two documentaries he helped create.

Accompanied by Communications Dean Rochelle Ford, a group of six students traveled to Chapel Hill on Oct. 20 to attend a forum presented by WTVD’s Minority Advisory Committee.

Elon alumnae Alexis de Groot ’17 and Sydney Brown ’18 partnered with faculty members Tony Weaver and Eric Hall to conduct a qualitative study and collect in-depth information on the perception of social support provided to student-athletes rehabilitating injuries.
