For Erin Price, America Reads has been more than just a service opportunity but a reminder of how education and compassion can change lives.

As a Califf Endowed Scholarship recipient, Malia Cortes ’28 uses her opportunity to pursue biology and the pre-med track to the fullest. With over 400 volunteer hours and an internship at Alamance Eye Center, she hopes to one day work and support Alamance’s Dermatology Practices.

The Oct. 31 program offered attendees hands-on demonstrations and discussions on how drones are reshaping industries from agriculture to public safety. New features this year included a lively drone soccer showcase by Asheboro City Schools and expanded sessions on AI applications, weather data, and flight authorization technology.

Hosted on Halloween, the annual Pumpkin Festival welcomed trick-or-treaters to the event for the first time.

During the event, small groups of students meet with community volunteers to discuss topics surrounding end-of-life care. Each participant first reflects individually, then joins their group in open, heartfelt dialogue.

Students discovered meaningful lessons during the Fall Alternative Break trip to Charlotte, where they focused on urban housing and homelessness through hands-on service and reflection.

The Campus Alamance program is an eight-week paid internship program that started in 2021, which provides Elon students with hands-on experience in their chosen field of study and helps them get involved in the local community.

Funded by an Elon Innovates Grant and promoted by the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, the training teaches mediation as a peaceful conflict resolution method.

Behind Elon's "It Takes A Village Project" are two AmeriCorps VISTAs and recent Elon graduates who work to maintain the success of the program.
