Political science & public administration major Kristine Elizabeth Silvestri has been named a finalist for a 2009 Truman Scholarship, a prestigious national fellowship for graduate study awarded annually “to persons who demonstrate outstanding potential for and who plan to pursue a career in public service.”

DNA equipment boosts undergraduate research

An $84,000 grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is helping Elon University purchase state-of-the-art equipment for processing DNA samples, a move that will accelerate and expand faculty and undergraduate science research that, until now, has relied on outside companies for processing.

Elon senior to present research in national program

Larissa Ferretti, a senior Honors Fellow and psychology major, will share her research this spring with lawmakers in Washington about the effects of parental involvement in teaching math and number skills to young children. Elon Winter Term course opens library, collects supplies for South Africa school

Twenty-nine students who spent Winter Term in South Africa collected money this fall to purchase gym uniforms, supplies and books for more than 155 children at a primary school that has worked with Elon University since last year through the Global Links Library and Literacy Campaign.

The 2009 ranking is published in the magazine’s February edition, and is the third consecutive top-50 ranking of Elon by Kiplinger’s.

Elon community donates textbooks for Ghana school

More than 3,000 books were collected this fall in a textbook drive organized by history professor Brian Digre. Digre delivered the books, packed into 120 boxes bound for the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, on Dec. 19 to a U.S. Naval base for transport to the African nation.

Students help viewers following state DTV tests

North Carolina television viewers flooded the School of Communications with phone calls Thursday as Elon students manned a call center to answer questions about a nationwide conversion to digital television. Regional stations alerted viewers to the DTV change on Feb. 17, 2009, with two “soft tests” that interrupted regular programming for people who rely on antennas to get reception.
