Elon University has been recognized for the sixth year in a row as a national leader in service-learning and civic engagement.

The National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement is holding an audioconference on Wednesday, Feb. 22 featuring Caryn McTighe Musil to discuss the task force’s recent report, “A Crucible Moment,” which is the latest to argue that civic education is lacking in the experience of most American college students.

The inaugural honor was bestowed on the chancellor of UNC Greensboro at the Compact’s Civic Engagement Institute.

Courtney Graham and Alex Moss graduated from Elon University this month having made a lasting contribution to their community while studying at Elon University. The duo are the first two alumni of Elon’s Civic Engagement Scholar program, which was designed for students looking to make a positive change by partnering with local organizations in need of assistance.

Three of North Carolina’s most influential voices in higher education gathered Wednesday, Feb. 9, for a panel discussion at a civic engagement conference on Elon University’s campus. Their message was simple: state and federal lawmakers should preserve financial aid for students in the ongoing recession, and to stay competitive in a global economy, schools must widen access for those who want to pursue college degrees.

Elon grandparent Tony Duke Sr., GP ’08, ’09, couldn’t let a little snow slow him down. Nor could the snow stop a coterie of Elon Leadership Fellows from meeting March 2 with the longtime university supporter.

Elon University junior Amber Mathis has received a Newman Civic Fellows Award from Campus Compact, a national organization that aims to improve community life and to educate college students on civic and social responsibility. She is one of 135 students from 30 states to receive the award.

CELEBRATE! 2011 continued Thursday afternoon at Elon University with four student presentations on academic service-learning projects that involved community outreach over the past year.

Student Global AIDS Campaign, an Elon Volunteers! club and Elon's only HIV/AIDS awareness program, will meet this Tuesday, April 5, to discuss events and garner future interest. Events for the semester include a 2-mile run and a dinner.
