The Elon chapter will host four speakers to discuss maintaining mental health as reporters on Thursday, April 22, at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held in Schar Hall, room 212, with a virtual option also available.

The former Elon women’s basketball team captain and current Bucks sideline reporter became the first woman to handle play-by-play responsibilities in the franchise’s 53-year history.

The journalism major will serve as a member of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Student Trustee Council, a group of students from across the country working to strengthen the organization.

The initiative, made possible through $300,000 in grant funding from the Scripps Howard Foundation, will support journalism in diverse and underserved communities, educating high school juniors and seniors from North Carolina and surrounding areas who are interested in pursuing careers in journalism and the media industry.

Fuller, director of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition and assistant professor of journalism, notes in the WRAL report that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld similar free speech protections in earlier rulings.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times Magazine reporter and 1619 Project founder spoke to participants about mentorship, the colloquium’s theme, as well as her journalistic career covering race, politics and launching the 1619 Project.

The three-day virtual event, which features numerous Elon faculty and students, kicked off with a moderated discussion with Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of the 1619 project, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times Magazine reporter.

Pawlus, who serves in the top staff post of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, addressed the history of LGBTQ news coverage, intersectionality in newsrooms, and how the organization can support student journalists.

School of Communications students and Elon News Network earned a total of 13 accolades in the Broadcast Education Association’s 2021 Festival of Media Arts, a digital media and broadcast competition for faculty and students.

Colonnades, Elon News Network and Phi Psi Cli all won Best of Show at the annual North Carolina College Media Association gathering hosted virtually by William Peace University.
