It’s a stereotype that persists to this day: Acclaimed African-American choral conductors are usually regarded for only having expertise in the area of gospel music and spirituals. Yet premier conductors, regardless of race, share so much more in common. Gerald Knight, an assistant professor of music, examines those traits in his first book, Two African American Choral Conductors: Eroding Misconceptions Through Excellence.

Matthew Buckmaster, assistant professor of music and education, presented Oct. 9 at the North Carolina Music Educator's Association annual conference in Winston-Salem.

Stephen A. Futrell, an associate professor of music, presented Nov. 7 at the North Carolina Music Educators Association In-Service Conference.

Thomas Erdmann, a professor of music, has been named Artist-In-Residence with the Duke University Hospitals.

Omri Shimron, assistant professor of music, will present a lecture-recital on Friday, Oct. 23, at the College Music Society National Conference in Portland, Oregon.

Associate professor of music Jon Metzger has received a Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in recognition of his performances and the usage of his compositions over the past year.

Todd Coleman's music was performed recently at a Band and Orchestra Festival in Santa Monica, Calif. His music was included on the program between Mozart's Symphony No. 41 and Beethoven's Egmont Overture - good company with which to be listed.
