Turn Ideas into Impact with a Marketing Major
Marketing at Elon combines strategy, creativity and analytics to prepare students for today’s fast-moving business world. Students learn how to understand customer needs, craft compelling messages and deliver solutions that drive results, while exploring the many ways marketing connects consumers with products, services and organizations. Through coursework in areas such as pricing, distribution, marketing communications, product and service design, and consumer insight, the program pairs foundational marketing principles with current tools and practices shaping the field.
From Elon Marketing to Career Confidence

Making connections and building relationships are core practices at Elon University, and for Joe Byrd, the marketing program’s emphasis on analytical thinking and actionable strategy made Elon the right place to pursue his interests. As the son of an Elon professor, he saw firsthand how close the student-faculty community was. “If this is the Elon way, I would love to be here,” said Byrd, a 2023 graduate with a double major in marketing and finance.
Small classes, weekly College Coffee traditions, and strong faculty relationships helped him develop the skills he uses today as a cloud security consultant at Zscaler. “Marketing as a major, as a field, it really comes down to connection,” Byrd said. “It’s about having a great team with you.”
Byrd honed those skills on the Elon Sales Team, competing nationally to craft compelling pitches, and by rechartering Pi Sigma Epsilon, a professional fraternity focused on sales, marketing and management. “What the marketing major allowed me to do is understand business really broadly but then also just cultivate the skill of crafting a really compelling message,” he said.
He encourages students to seek out opportunities with faculty and organizations. “Probably the most important thing I’ve done is getting to know people, networking with people. That was a skill I really picked up at Elon, and it’s been serving me well so far.”
