Why CS at Elon? Resources | Computer Information SystemsComputer Information Systems at Elon is a hands-on program that gives the student a solid foundation in information systems including knowledge and skills about networks, web publishing, database development, systems analysis and application development. The CIS major is designed for students who seek to blend their technical capabilities with skills specific to another discipline. Traditionally, students have combined the CIS major with minors in Business Administration or Accounting. However, many other disciplines are natural compliments to CIS (e.g. Biology, Economics, English, Health, etc). The CIS major prepares the student to work in a programming or non-programming technical or management position including: Systems Analyst, Application Programmer, Database Programmer/Administrator, Program Manager, Network Administrator, Web Developer, Webmaster, Web Programmer or Computer Support. What is Computer Information Systems?The Information Systems discipline centers on the development of systems that will improve the performance of people in organizations. Information systems are vital to problem identification, analysis, and decision making that are an integral part of many fields of study. Students in information systems apply problem-solving techniques and programming skills to the design, implementation and maintenance of these information systems. Computer-based information systems have become a critical part of the products, services, and management of organizations. Information systems are pervasive in all organization functions and are used by accounting, finance, marketing and production. The efficient and effective use of information technology is an important element in achieving competitive advantage. The information systems function has the broad responsibility to develop, implement and manage an infrastructure of information technology. The activity of developing systems for organizations and inter-organization processes involves creative use of information technology for data acquisition, communication, system analysis and decision support. The criticality of the information systems function has caused a large demand for information systems professionals. The job market has seen double-digit growth each year for the past five years and this is projected to continue until the year 2020. | |
