Exercise Science B.S.

Elon’s exercise science degree engages students in multiple perspectives of kinesiology and exercise science, the study of the mechanisms underlying human movement, exercise and physical activity. Our program includes hands-on experiences and undergraduate research opportunities in exercise science sub-disciplines including human anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, psychology, motor control and biomechanics.

Sample courses in Elon’s exercise science degree program:

  • Exercise Psychology: Examine issues related to physical activity, including exercise adherence, physical inactivity, the psychological benefits of exercise, body image and the psychology of injury.
  • Sport Psychology: Examine the theories and research related to sport behavior, including personality, motivation, arousal, imagery, goal setting and burnout.
  • Biomechanics: Study anatomical systems from through physical education activities, exercise/sports injuries and sports skills. Learn how to use motion analysis software for projectile analysis, gait analysis, vertical jump analysis, calculation of center of gravity and other activities.
  • Neuromotor Control: Understand how human movement is produced and controlled through musculoskeletal and neuromuscular human anatomy.

The Exercise Science program is dedicated to developing a student’s critical thinking skills, capacity to solve problems and the ability to apply theoretical concepts. These abilities are addressed in classroom and laboratory settings as well as practicum, internship and independent research opportunities.
