The Global Education Center (GEC) is available to help international students navigate the application process, arrival, and adjustment to life at Elon. The services the GEC offers are designed to help international students feel at home while studying abroad and to foster the growth of a global community.
All students are required to carry health insurance during their time at Elon University. The GEC recommends students carry the recommended Elon insurance, as the GEC is able to assist with filing claims and other matters under this insurance. Students will be billed for health insurance unless they demonstrate to the GEC that they have a policy that meets the requirements listed under the "Insurance" heading on the U.S. Department of State's J-1 visa website. All policies must be written in English and have English-speaking customer service representatives.
To view the Elon recommended policy, click here.
To waive the Elon recommended policy, click here. Waiving this policy is subject to verification, so students who waive their policy should be prepared to present documentation of insurance that meets the requirements described above.
The GEC provides transportation from the Raleigh-Durham (RDU) or Piedmont-Triad (GSO) airports to campus for incoming students. We strongly encourage you to inform the GEC at least two weeks before your arrival if you need a ride. The beginning of the semester is a busy time of year, and spots fill up quickly. Information about airport transportation is available on the Traveling, Arrival, & Orientation page.
Once new students arrive on campus and before classes begin, the GEC holds a two-day international student orientation. Current Elon students serve as student mentors and orientation leaders. They will provide international students with campus tours, information sessions, activities, and time to socialize with other students.
To help you prepare for your arrival in the United States, the GEC has put together an International Student Handbook that provides important information on everything from applying for your visa to what to pack. If you have any questions, contact the GEC.
Visa information will be provided during the application process. For more information on the U.S. visa process, refer to the Visa Application and Information page.
The GEC organizes various events throughout the year including social events, trips to local and regional attractions, and International Education Week.
If you have any questions about applying to Elon or adjusting to life in the United States, feel free to contact us.
