Bloodborne Pathogens Policy

Purpose

Elon University (Elon) is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all faculty and staff. In pursuit of this aim, the following Exposure Control Plan is provided to eliminate or minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP) in accordance with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030, “Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.” Elon has developed this guidance to protect all Faculty and Staff who handle, store, use, or dispose of infectious material. Everyone with the potential to contact infectious material must comply with these procedures.

Scope

The following is a list of positions on campus in which some individuals have the potential for occupational exposure:

• Campus Police Officer
• Custodian
• Sanitation Worker
• Plumber
• Athletic Trainer
• Faculty/Staff/Student Worker that work in Biological & Health Sciences and Exercise Science


Procedure

A Hepatitis B vaccination shall be made available to Faculty and Staff identified as having potential occupational exposure.  New hires or transferred Faculty/Staff will be offered the vaccine within ten (10) working days of initial employment or reassignment.
