![]() | Letter to Graduating Seniors from Faculty Marshal
May 1, 2008 Outlined below are details related to your Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 24. Should you have any special needs or questions regarding Commencement, please call the Office of Cultural Programs at 278-5605 and speak with Martha Hill or me. You must be in Jordan Gym with your cap and gown by 8:15 a.m. on Saturday morning. I suggest you wear comfortable dress shoes. You will be walking quickly across campus, up and down the ramps at the stage in front of West, and going up several sets of steps. When you arrive in Jordan, you will be given a card with a seat number. Your seat in Jordan determines your place in the line-up of candidates and ensures that you will be in the correct order as you cross the stage to receive your diploma. After you are seated in Jordan, we will tell you about the processional and explain how the degrees will be awarded. Following the recessional, there will be a reception for graduates on Scott Plaza. We anticipate that more than 10,000 people will attend graduation and it will be difficult to locate family and friends. Signs for each of the academic departments will be placed above the reception tables and departmental faculty will be hosting the reception at each table. Please plan to meet your family near the sign of your academic major. In the unlikely event of inclement weather, you will still assemble in Jordan Gym, and Commencement Exercises will be held in Alumni Gymnasium in Koury Center. If the weather is uncertain and you have concerns regarding the location of Commencement please call our weather update line 336-278-RAIN (7246). The university switchboard (278-2000) will be open Friday evening and Saturday morning. If Commencement is moved to Koury Center, each graduate will be limited to two guests. The approximately 1,100 graduates and their two guests will fill Alumni Gym, and there will be no additional seats. Our guests who do not have seats in Koury Center will be able to view the Commencement Exercises on closed circuit TV. An explanation of our severe weather plan and a map identifying the locations for closed circuit viewing are on the back panels of the enclosed brochure. Caps and gowns may be picked up in the Campus Shop during regular store hours. Beginning on Tuesday, May 6, you may pick up your rain location tickets in the Office of the Vice President and Dean of Student Life, Alamance 109. In order to receive your tickets you must have your Phoenix Card and pick up your rain location tickets in person. Regardless of the weather forecast, please be sure that on Saturday morning your rain location tickets are in the possession of the individuals who will be using them. To avoid the last minute rush, please pick up your cap, gown, and tickets prior to May 22. Tickets are not required for the Commencement Exercises outside Under the Oaks. Please remember that you must not be late Saturday morning. If all of the graduates are not in Jordan at 8:15 a.m., it will be difficult to begin the program on time. I look forward to seeing you graduate on Saturday, May 24. Sincerely yours,
George W. Troxler |
