About the Multicultural Center

Mission: To provide Elon students a transformative multicultural education needed to function effectively in a diverse world.

Vision: To promote a campus environment of learning and outreach that promotes diverse ideas, backgrounds, and individuals; enables student success; and celebrates historical contributions of diverse groups.

Goals of the Center:

1. Provide students from diverse populations a welcoming environment and connections to campus resources.
2. Help all students explore/define identity, and increase cultural awareness and knowledge of self.
3. Advance students’ multicultural understanding for success in the professional world by infusing diversity and diverse perspectives into curricular/co-curricular programming.
4. Provide training and resources to address discrimination, bias, misconceptions, and stereotypes.
5. Increase awareness of social justice issues and taking action in under-served communities.

Five Core Competencies

The Multicultural Center will launch student learning outcomes around five core competenceis: Life Management Skills, Personal and Civic Responsibility, Leadership, Global Perspective, and Identity Development. These competencies will serve as the thrust of the multicultural education and services for students.

Identity Development – Students will learn about the social history of self. Students will also explore how other cultures and subcultures function in society. A significant part of learning will involve addressing one’s biases, misconceptions, preconceived notions, and stereotypes.

Global Perspective - Students will participate in researching international affairs, specifically third world countries and learning about social, political, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and occupational relations that influence life’s advancement.

Personal and Civic Responsibility - Students will take active roles in service learning initiatives and immersion experiences to be better informed citizens. Students will also seek national charities to promote a tone of respect and civility for under-served individuals and groups. Personally, students will take an inventory on their ability to manage money, finances, health, destiny, emotions, and spiritual journey.

Life Skills - Recognizing that there are many life skills and that there are no definitive answers, students will be exposed to the following psychosocial and interpersonal skills—interpersonal, negotiation, cooperation/teamwork, advocacy, critical thinking, and self-management.
