The Diversity Leadership Conference was created in 2009 through the Multicultural Student Council with a mission to assemble students, faculty, and professional staff from Elon University and the surrounding community for engaged learning around topics of: power, privilege, oppression, and inequality. This was achieved through keynote speakers as well as workshops. Previous keynote speakers included Jeff Johnson and Molly Secours. The student led two day conference has allowed participants to examine their personal beliefs, engage in meaningful conversation, and identify action steps to encourage diverse leadership and diverse perspectives.
The Leadership Development Institute (LDI) was created in 1997 through the Center for Leadership by Dean Rex Waters and John Barnhill, former director of the Center. The vision was to help students create and maintain sustainable organizations by providing intentional time and resources to improve the leadership transitions in organizations. Through the fourteen years, LDI has evolved in both content and attendance opening registration to all students and expanding content to allow students to explore non-positional leadership development. Think globally, act locally.
