Racial Equity & Social Justice Consulting

The Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education (CREDE) offers tailored consulting for Elon students, faculty, and staff to work toward equity and justice in their classes, schools, organizations, clubs, teams, centers, and departments. We empower our campus organizations, offices, departments, and centers to include a consciousness of identities, particularly around race, as well as an orientation to equity and justice as an integral part of their work. This process may include: 1) training, dialogues, and workshops to move our partners to a common understanding of complex issues; 2) analysis and assessment of current practices; and 3) planning and strategy to improve outcomes. Contact us at diversity@elon.edu or 336-278-7243 to start consulting with the CREDE staff.

Race, Reflection, and Discussion Series

Since the June 2015 fatal shootings of nine black people by a white man at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, the CREDE staff has facilitated faculty and staff discussions on race and racism in our communities. Each Thursday during July, colleagues gather for an extended lunch and learn professional development opportunity co-sponsored by the Office of Leadership and Professional Development. Over a provided meal, participants engage in discussions about race-related prompts, questions, and videos that create a shared basis for exploring this socially constructed concept. The CREDE staff serve as facilitators who create space for sharing new information, challenge conventional thinking by making the invisible visible, and provide skills for engaging in constructive discussions on race.

Race-nicity Lunch Series

Several times throughout the year, the CREDE hosts events for faculty and staff to come together and discuss a particular book/article over lunch. This is an opportunity for the campus community to engage in open dialogue about race and ethnicity.

Faculty and Staff Receptions

Each fall semester, the CREDE invites all faculty and staff to attend a reception to welcome new faculty and staff of varying ethnic and racial identities.  This event celebrates their contributions to the Elon community and supports Elon's abiding commitment to sustain a campus climate where differences are embraced and each member feels respected and valued as a unique individual.

Graduate School Preparation

The CREDE provides graduate school preparation in partnership with the Student Professional Development Center. Additionally, Dr. Cherrel Miller Dyce, CREDE's faculty fellow, advises students of the various pathways to graduate and professional schools.
