Annual Services
Throughout the year, we celebrate certain days to help us remember the
past and relive it each year in a new manner:
Friday, May 23
Baccalaureate at Graduation
Alumni Gymnasium, 3 p.m.
The Reverend Doctor James A. Forbes Jr., senior minister of the Riverside
Church in New York City, will preach the Baccalaureate sermon for the
Class of 2003. Newsweek magazine has called Forbes, a North Carolina native,
one of the twelve "most effective preachers" in the English-speaking world.
Coming in Fall 2003
Blessing
of the Animals Service
Father John Ruffo, Franciscan Friar and campus minister for Elon's Catholic
Campus Ministry, celebrated the annual Franciscan tradition of the Blessing
of Animals at College Chapel Oct. 3. About a dozen students, faculty and
staff brought their pets, or pictures of them, to the service to be blessed.
St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals.
December 2003
Holiday Celebration with Luminaries
Hot chocolate, carol singing and hundreds of luminaries lining the walkways
mark Elon's annual "Festival of Holiday Lights."
December 2003
Moravian Christmas Love Feast and Candle Service
Brought from Germany to Old Salem, North Carolina, by early Moravian settlers,
this traditional Christmas service includes the children's carol "Morning
Star," pure beeswax candles, and a simple fellowship meal of coffee and
a Moravian bun.
January 2004
Winter Feast
Winter Feast is a great way to chase away the cold blast of winter! Elon's
community is invited to join with area churches for a potluck supper.
Students enjoy a home-cooked meal along with Elon faculty, staff, families
and church members. Join us in January 2004 in McKinnon Hall, Moseley
Center. Contact the Religious Life Office for reservations at 278-7729.
