The two student news organizations placed nationally in a pair of college media competitions.
Elon News Network and Phi Psi Cli were honored with several national awards at the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association National College Media Convention held Oct. 25-29 in Dallas.
CMA’s Pinnacle Awards recognize students in dozens of areas, including reporting, design, photography, social media and multimedia.
- Elon News Network work finished first for Best Sports section for coverage from its Aug. 31, 2016, Nov. 9, 2016, and March 15, 2017, editions.
- Elon News Network took second for 4-Year TV Station of the Year for “Elon Local News” shows from Oct. 31, 2016, Nov. 17, 2016, and Feb. 20, 2017.
- Caroline Brehman ’18 finished third for Best Photo Page/Spread for “Colors of Holi.”
- Stephanie Hays ’18 placed third for Best Photo Illustration for “Shielded with Screens.”
ACP’s Best of Show awards are open only to student media organizations that submit their entries during the convention. Categories are offered for newspaper, yearbook, website, magazine, special section and multimedia package.
- The Pendulum finished first for Newspaper Four-Year Weekly for its Sept. 20, 2017, edition.
- Phi Psi Cli placed third for Yearbook 1-299 Pages for its 2016-17 book.
- Elon News Network finished fourth for Multimedia Package for “When Connie Book left Elon two years ago, her journey to the presidency had just begun.”
- Elon News Network won seventh place for Website Small School.
- Elon News Network finished 10th for Newspaper Special Section for its 2017 Fall Sports Preview.
Additionally, Colin Donohue ’05, director of student media and instructor of communications, received his Distinguished 4-Year Newspaper Adviser Award from CMA for his service to The Pendulum, which he advised for nine years. Tommy Kopetskie, communications manager for the School of Communications and Phi Psi Cli adviser, critiqued yearbooks and websites for students from other colleges and universities. Maggie Mullikin, coordinator of graduate outreach and special programs, also provided on-site resume critiques for student attendees.
In attendance at the conference representing Elon News Network and Phi Psi Cli were Emmanuel Morgan ’19, Meg Malone ’20, Liam Collins ’19, Maya Eaglin ’19, Laurel Wind ’19 and Jordan Levine ’19. Kelly Furnas, lecturer in communications and Pendulum adviser, was also in attendance.
This year, more than 1,500 students from schools across the country attended the National College Media Convention, which featured hundres of sessions, networking opportunities, professional critiques and other special events.
