Buildings briefly closed following gas line rupture

Lakeside Dining Hall and Moseley Center were temporarily evacuated Sept. 17, 2013, when a work crew struck an unmarked gas line in the nearby Global Neighborhood construction site.

Work crews digging a trench struck an unmarked gas line Tuesday morning in the Global Neighborhood constructrion site shortly before lunch, prompting the Alamance County Fire Marshal’s Office to order the temporary evacuation of surrounding buildings as a precaution.

The accident took place about 11:15 a.m. as workers dug a trench to run power lines to a plaza outside of Lakeside Dining Hall. Fire officials were already at the work site and immediately ordered all construction to cease and for three existing buildings to be cleared: Lakeside Dining Hall, Moseley Center and the Center for Leadership building, the former site of the student health center.

Gas was quickly disconnected and all facilities reopened by noon.
