Ensemble Information

Elon University jazz ensembles provide students with exciting performance opportunities on and off campus within a vibrant, creative musical community. Each ensemble is open to music majors AND non-music majors including instrumentalists and vocalists.

The Elon jazz program offers two types of jazz ensemble with different musical objectives:

MUS 1040 Jazz Ensemble (big band)

Dr. Alex Heitlinger, director

The Elon Jazz Ensemble is a large jazz ensemble (up to 17 musicians) performing big band repertoire that spans the rich history of jazz, from classics to modern sounds. This ensemble is open to student instrumentalists who perform saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drum set.

This ensemble performs feature concerts each semester and regularly shares the stage with esteemed guest artists. In previous years, the ensemble has also toured and performed at festivals throughout Europe.

MUS 1041 Jazz Combos (small ensembles)

Dr. Alex Heitlinger, director

Elon Jazz Combos are dynamic smaller jazz ensembles, ranging from 3 to 8 musicians. A close-knit group setting allows students to sharpen their improvisational talents while exploring jazz repertoire from a range of styles and eras. Combos provide a vehicle for student band members to help select repertoire, shape the musical arrangements, and even write original music. Flexible instrumentation welcomes students on any instrument or voice. Jazz combos present feature concerts each semester, host regular jam sessions at the Oak House, and often perform for campus events such as College Coffee.
