Documentation and Waiver Process
HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENT UPDATE
The Student Blue Portal for Spring Enrollment will open OCTOBER 30th. Information will be emailed soon with instructions to students who may need to update their current insurance information.
If you have already created an account on the Student Blue Portal, you can log into your account and access the Student Blue Dashboard to change account profile information. If you need assistance accessing the Student Blue Portal please call Blue Cross Blue Shield at 800-579-8022.
If you have questions about the Elon University Student Health Insurance requirement, email healthinsurance@elon.edu or call the office at 336-278-7276. Someone will respond within two business days.
Fall/Winter Waiver Period (Oct.30-Nov.17 )
Students who currently have insurance and whose insurance meets the waiver criteria are not required to enroll in the Student Blue plan.
- For current students with an approved waiver for Fall 2023 and have verified continued coverage for Spring 2024: Blue Cross Blue Shield will use your existing information to verify coverage for Spring 2024. If your continued insurance coverage can be verified, you do not need to take any additional action.
- For current students with an approved waiver for Fall 2023 and their continued coverage for Spring 2024 cannot be verified: If Blue Cross Blue Shield cannot verify existing coverage for Spring 2024, you will need to request a waiver and enter updated insurance information. To renew your waiver request for Spring 2024 you must Student Blue Portal. Blue Cross Blue Shield will contact your insurance company to verify continued coverage for Spring. If continued coverage can be verified, no further action is necessary.
- If Blue Cross Blue Shield cannot verify continued coverage for Spring 2023, you must enroll in the Student Blue Plan. Students can complete the enrollment or waiver process by visiting the Student Blue Portal and updating their insurance information or enrolling in the plan. All waiver requests must be approved by November 17,2023, to avoid default enrollment in the Student Blue Plan and the charge for the premium added to the tuition bill. Once the charge is added to the tuition bill students will have until January 15,2024, to receive an approved waiver and the insurance premium charge can be removed from the bill.
To upload your insurance information, you will need:
- Your Elon Student ID # (available On Track)
- Insurance policy information (available on your insurance card)
- The date of birth of the primary subscriber (may be a parent or an employed partner)
- A photo of both sides of your insurance card (you will need to upload both sides)
- New/incoming students (undergraduate, graduate and law students) enrolling for the first time in Winter Term or Spring 2024: To request a waiver, students must upload their insurance documentation before November 17, 2023, or within 10 business days of your acceptance to the university.
To upload your insurance information, you will need:

- Insurance policy information (available on your insurance card)
- The date of birth of the primary subscriber (may be a parent or an employed partner)
- A photo of both sides of your insurance card (you will need to upload both sides)
- If you do not do not currently have health insurance that meets the waiver criteria and need to enroll in the Student Blue plan: If your current health insurance does not meet the waiver criteria or you do not have health insurance, visit the Student Blue Plan website and follow the instructions on the “Enroll” tab to enroll in the Student Blue plan for the fall.
- Once you pay your tuition bill, you do not need to take any additional steps. The university will forward your premium payment to Blue Cross Blue Shield.
- Your Student Blue plan benefits will begin February 1. You will receive more information about plan benefits and how to access your benefits in the next few weeks.
- If you are an international student you are required to enroll in the Student Blue plan and pay the Spring 2024 premium. It is important that you also complete the enrollment process as soon as possible.
- To complete your enrollment, visit the Student Blue Plan website and follow the instructions on the “Enroll” tab to enroll in the plan for the fall.
- The Spring premium ($ 1302.00- undergraduates and $ 1939.50- graduates/law) will be added to your student bill.
- Once you pay your tuition bill, you do not need to take any additional steps. The university will forward your premium payment to Blue Cross Blue Shield.
- Your Student Blue plan benefits will begin February 1. You will receive more information about plan benefits and how to access your benefits in the next few weeks.
- If you already have insurance but would like to enroll in the Student Blue plan as a secondary or supplemental policy, follow plan enrollment instructions. To complete your enrollment, visit the Student Blue Plan website and follow the instructions on the “Enroll” tab to enroll in the plan for the fall.
- Pay the fall premium on your tuition bill and the university will forward payment to Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Your Student Blue plan benefits will begin February 1. You will receive more information about plan benefits and how to access
- Students who do not upload their insurance documentation and receive a waiver by Nov. 17 will be enrolled in the Student Blue Plan and the premium charge will appear on their tuition statement for the winter/spring semester.
Please note: Students who do not complete a waiver request and receive a waiver by November 17 will automatically be enrolled into the Student Blue Plan and the charge will be paced on their bill. After the charge appears on the tuition bill, students may continue to upload their insurance information into the system before January 15.
If the coverage meets the waiver criteria, the charge will be removed from the tuition bill.

Spring Semester/Summer Waiver Period (Feb. 15-June 15)
Students who currently have insurance and whose insurance meets the waiver criteria are not required to enroll in the Student Blue plan. To be considered for waiving the plan’s coverage, students must enter current insurance information into the portal by the enrollment deadline.
Enrollment waiver dates are as follows:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students planning to enroll for fall courses: The waiver portal opens Feb. 23 and students should upload proof of insurance before spring course registration begins. Students must upload an image of their insurance card. Students who do not currently have insurance or who do not have access to their current insurance information may indicate they plan to upload insurance documentation before June and understand they will be enrolled in the Student Blue Plan and the charge will appear on their tuition statement for the fall semester.
- New/incoming students (undergraduate, graduate and law students) enrolling for the first time in August or September: Students must upload their insurance before June 1 or within 10 business days of their acceptance to the university. Students who do not upload their insurance documentation by June 1 understand they will be enrolled in the Student Blue Plan and the charge will appear on their tuition statement for the fall semester.
Please note: Students who do not complete a waiver request and receive a waiver by July 1 will automatically be enrolled into the Student Blue Plan and the charge will be paced on their bill. Even after the charge appears on the tuition bill, students may continue to upload their insurance information into the system before August 15. If the coverage meets the waiver criteria, the charge will be removed from their tuition bill.
Waiver Criteria
Students may petition to waive their enrollment in the Student Blue Plan if they provide documentation that the policy criteria are met:
- The claims administrator of the plan is based in the United States, has a U.S. telephone number and address for submission of claims, and the insurance policy has not been issued outside the U.S.
- The plan provides emergency care in the Elon/Alamance County/ North Carolina area, including Cone Health Systems.
Note: Students who hold an F1 or J1 visa are automatically enrolled in the Elon Student Blue Plan and the coverage cannot be waived. The premium charge will be on their bill and the student will be responsible for paying the entire premium.
Students can complete the enrollment or waiver process by visiting the Student Blue Plan website.
To complete the waiver process, students will need their Student ID # (available through On Track), the date of birth of the primary policy holder/subscriber (usually their parent or partner), and a copy of their current insurance card to upload.
Documentation submitted during the spring will be evaluated after June 1 and the student will be notified soon after June 1. Waiver requests at all other times of the year will be reviewed and responded to within ten business days.
