Health Insurance Waiver Process

To be eligible for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet all of the following requirements:

    • The plan’s claims administrator is based in the United States, with a U.S. mailing address and telephone number for claims submissions.
    • The policy was issued within the United States.
    • The plan includes emergency care coverage in the Elon/Alamance County/North Carolina area, including access to Cone Health facilities.

If your coverage meets the criteria above, you must submit proof of health insurance each semester by completing an online waiver through the Student Blue portal.  Students must waive the insurance on the Student Blue website before the deadline to avoid a premium charge being added to their student account. The deadline for Fall 2025 is June 15, 2025.

Students will need to provide the following information:

    • Your Elon Student ID number (available via OnTrack).
    • The date of birth of the primary policyholder/subscriber (usually a parent or partner).
    • A photo or scan copy of the front and back of your current insurance card (to upload).

Students must be officially registered for classes before applying for a waiver. The Student Blue system will not let you proceed with their waiver application unless you are registered for courses.

How to Submit a Waiver (All Eligible Students)

    • Visit the Student Blue website.
    • Click
      • “Request Waiver” if you are a current/returning student, or
      • “Enroll for Coverage” to create an account if this is your first time logging in
    • Click on “Waiver” to decline.
    • Follow the prompts and complete the entire process.

Beginning June 1, 2025, Blue Cross Blue Shield will start verifying insurance coverage.  Once verified, they will send the student a notification by email. Students should keep a copy for their records.  Please read all emails from Student Blue. Emails will be sent to the student’s elon.edu email address. Student Blue has the option for you to have a secondary email address, such as a parent’s address.

Note: Waiver requests submitted outside the standard enrollment window will be reviewed and responded to within ten business days.
