What is a Graduate Program?

A graduate program is advanced education beyond a bachelor’s degree. Graduate programs offer a more in-depth expertise in a specialized field and include master’s degrees, doctoral degrees and other professional education.

Graduate programs are designed to build upon knowledge, enhance research capabilities and gain deeper professional skills. Depending on the field of study and program, graduate education may include a variety of learning formats including coursework and lectures, research projects, internships, capstones or clinical experiences.

Types of Graduate Programs:

  • Master’s Degrees: Master’s programs are often completed in 1-2 years and deepen a student’s understanding of topics studied to help prepare a student for leadership or specialized roles
  • Doctoral Degrees: Doctoral programs could take 3-7 years to complete depending on specific requirements. These terminal degrees focus on advanced research, scholarship or clinical practice.
  • Graduate Certificates: Graduate certificates are often shorter (usually less than a year) and enhance skills in a specific area. Some certificate programs might be applied toward a full graduate degree, it depends on the program.
