GST 210A
is the place for you. This class will look at the real impacts of forgetting a storm: Hurricane Ike.
Below you will find the course description. Please contact Staci Saltz (ssaltz@elon.edu) with any questions. Don’t miss out on the opportunity of truly making a difference this Winter Term.
Course Description: This course examines the relationship between volunteerism, public health and media coverage with a focus on Hurricane Ike. Being engaged in service-learning will give students the opportunity to provide community service in response to community-identified public health concerns and the opportunity to learn about the context in which service is provided, the role media plays in these concerns, the connection between service and academic coursework, and their roles as citizens.
We live in a day where the media plays a huge role in distributing the information that we receive about events all over the world. What are we, as citizens, doing about accessing information if the media is not telling us? The people of Galveston are in need of help and we are hearing very little about it through the media.
How is this affecting their ability to get help and rebuild? What role does the media play in the response to a devastation like Hurricane Ike? The service learning experience in Galveston, Texas, will offer students many opportunities to engage in problem-solving by requiring them to gain knowledge of public health issues and community challenges.
As a result, the service-learning experience should offer students powerful opportunities to acquire the habits of critical thinking; and the ability to identify the most important questions or issues within a real-world situation. Cost: $650 per student (Covers travel, lodging and food). Counts towards Society.
