Engaging the community as a teacher-scholar: A conversation with John Saltmarsh and Patti Clayton

Many Elon faculty work closely with community partners in their teaching or their research. John Saltmarsh is a national expert on academic service-learning and on community-based research, which sometimes are together called the Scholarship of Engagement. In this lunch discussion, we will focus on strategies for partnering with the community in teaching and research in ways that meet both high scholarly standards and important community needs.

John Saltmarsh is the Director of the New England Resource Center for Higher Education, and a professor in the Graduate College of Education, at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, as well as a faculty member in the Department of Leadership Education in the Graduate College of Education. From 1998 through 2005, he directed Campus Compact’s Project on Integrating Service with Academic Study.

Patti H. Clayton is a Senior Scholar with the Center for Service and Learning at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and a Visiting Fellow with the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE). She was founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement at NC State University and previously served as a Faculty Fellow with National Campus Compact’s Project on Integrating Service with Academic Study.
