President Leo M. Lambert has appointed Brooke Barnett, associate professor of communications, to a two-year term as Faculty Administrative Fellow and Assistant to the President. She will begin her duties June 1.
Barnett will participate in President Lambert’s senior staff meetings and focus on advancing the goals related to diversity and global engagement as outlined in the university’s 10-year strategic plan, The Elon Commitment. She will also continue to teach in the School of Communications and remain active in scholarship.
Among the initiatives Barnett will be working on are plans to strengthen and expand the role of the multicultural center, build a multi-faith center and promote a rich interfaith dialogue on campus, triple the number of international students at Elon and other efforts to expand the diversity of the campus and its connections with the global community.
Barnett completes her term as chair of Elon’s Academic Council this spring. She has been a member of Elon’s faculty since 2001 and directs Elon Docs, the university’s documentary production program. She previously taught at Indiana University and has worked as a news director, reporter, television host and documentary producer.
Barnett’s research has been published in numerous communications journals. She is the author of “The War on Terror and the Wars in Iraq” in the Greenwood American War Reporting series, and is co-editor of “Communication and Law: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Research,” and co-author of “Terrorism and the Press: An Uneasy Relationship.” Barnett has also produced documentary films that have won awards, aired on public television and screened at film festivals.
