Jim Schlossnagle ’92 named college baseball’s national coach of the year

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has voted Texas Christian University head coach Jim Schlossnagle '92 its national coach of the year. Schlossnagle, in his seventh season coaching the Horned Frogs, guided the team to a 51-12 record, its fifth consecutive Mountain West Conference regular-season title and its first berth in the College World Series.

NCBWA National Coach of the Year voting includes coaches of the year for all Division I conferences as well as the coaches of the eight teams that reach the College World Series. Schlossnagle was the only coach whose name appeared on every voter’s ballot, and he received the award on Saturday morning at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., where the College World Series is held.

During his time at Elon, Schlossnagle pitched on the 1989 Fightin’ Christians team that went 36-9 and advanced to the NAIA World Series. He served as a student coach from 1990 to 1992, helping the program post a 99-41 record and two South Atlantic Conference titles. He graduated magna cum laude from Elon in 1992 with a degree in physical education.

After serving a season as an assistant coach at Clemson University and seven as an associate head coach at Tulane University, Schlossnagle became head coach at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in 2001. In 2003, he began his career at TCU, where he has won six conference coach of the year awards.
