Randy Piland, photojournalism professor in the School of Communications, spent a weekend last Fall photographing Boy Scouts from Troop 87, Maryville, Tenn., as they backpacked from Newfound Gap to Kephart Prong in the Smoky Mountains.
They were participating in a service project called 100 years/100 miles, part of the 100th year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The photos appear in the September 2010 edition of Boys’ Life magazine.
Piland’s photos captured the Scouts doing service for the National Park Service by checking the condition of trail signs along a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Boys’ Life magazine reaches 1.1 million Scout subscribers and 200,000 non-Scout subscribers. Pass-along readership means that more than 6 million people read Boys’ Life each month.
