The show was named Best Student Newscast in North and South Carolina. Senior Kirsten Bennett won first place for Best Student Feature reporting. Senior Drew Smith won Student Journalist of the Year and the John Bittner Scholarship.

The RTDNAC is a professional journalism association and the awards are judged by television news professionals. Phoenix 14 adviser and Communications associate professor Rich Landesberg said he was proud of his students.

“I often tell them to avoid doing work for awards, but always to do award-winning work,” Landesberg said, “and this shows if you work hard and at the highest levels you are capable of, your work will be recognized.”

The students will have little time to savor their awards as they go live at 6 Monday night for their weekly news show, and live again on Tuesday for election specials. Those specials will be broadcast on campus and throughout Greensboro on WCWG, channel 20.
