Effective Reading in the Disciplines 12:15-1:25 p.m. Belk Pavilion 201

Students often struggle to read different types of disciplinary texts – sometimes reading a textbook the same as a scholarly article, and a economics text the same as a novel. To learn deeply in a discipline, students need to learn discipline-specific ways of reading, writing and thinking. This workshop will focus on reading across the disciplines, exploring strategies for making implicit reading processes explicit and helping students become more strategic readers. Nina Namaste (Foreign Languages), Katie King (Psychology/CATL) and Peter Felten (CATL/History & Geography) will facilitate this lunch workshop. To reserve a space and to order a lunch, contact Barbara Guy by February 16. Plan to bring a text that students sometimes (or often) struggle to read in your classes.
