Weekend summit brings together Greek leaders on campus

Elon University’s Greek community hosted its 2nd Greek Summit on Feb. 4-5, with attendance from more than 125 student leaders, alumni, faculty and staff advisers, and national representatives of Elon's 22 current fraternities and sororities.

Representatives from all 22 fraternities and sororities at Elon took part in the Greek Summit, as well as alumni and members of national organizations.

Representatives of Delta Upsilon and Kappa Delta, two new organizations colonizing at Elon this year, also took part in the summit, the first at the university since 1994.

Rex Waters, associate dean of students, welcomed participants at a Friday evening dinner, where Vice President of Student Life Smith Jackson encouraged attendees to collectively engage the efforts of all present to build upon the ideals of the Greek community at Elon, and develop plans for creating and sustaining a model Greek Life community.

Jackson led a values ceremony facilitated by NPHC, PHC and IFC governing council leadership.

Highlights from the Summit include a review of the Fraternity and Sorority Coalition Assessment Project Report and a summary of input from more than 1,500 Greek students at Elon by Shana Plasters, director of Greek Life. National leadership and volunteers from each of the three councils also had the opportunity to address the delegates about the importance of connecting to the larger Greek community and the role individual chapters have in helping establish a model Greek community.

Delegates attended breakout sessions by chapter, governing council and topic area, which focused on academics and scholarship, community, philanthropy and service, leadership and mentorship, and personal and chapter accountability.

At the end of the summit, all 22 chapters were asked to develop an action strategy for each of these five topic areas and commit to completing those goals by the end of the semester.
