At Elon Law's sixth Reception with the Legal Community this year, The Honorable John C. Martin, Chief Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, spoke as the event's special guest judge.
At the April 14 event, Martin noted that he was a classmate of Elon Law’s founding dean and professor of law emeritus Leary Davis at Wake Forest University School of Law. In his remarks, Martin also noted some of Elon Law’s distinctions in legal education in the state.
“This law school has led the way in a number of areas,” Judge Martin said, noting that Elon was the first North Carolina law school to locate in the downtown of a large city, the first to develop a Preceptor Program, and the first to make its facilities available to the North Carolina Business Court.
Judge Martin served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals from1985 to 1988, from 1993 to 2004, and as Chief Judge of the Court from 2004 to the present. Prior to his service on the Court of Appeals, he was Resident Judge for the North Carolina Superior Court, 14th Judicial District, from 1977 to 1984. Judge Martin has also served in private practice. He is a veteran of the United States Army.

The April Reception with the Legal Community at Elon Law was the sixth and final reception of its kind scheduled for the academic year.
Margaret Kantlehner, associate professor of law and director of externships, preceptors and capstone leadership experiences, thanked the attorneys and judges who helped to make the reception series successful through their participation.
“Our six Receptions with the Legal Community this year were notable for the number accomplished lawyers and judges regularly in attendance, the high level of engagement between attorneys and law students, and the value of commentary offered by the distinguished judges who spoke as special guests,” Kantlehner said. “Our thanks to the attorneys and judges who joined us at the receptions, especially to preceptors who offer guidance to law students throughout the year. We’re really pleased that so many law students were able to meet with lawyers and judges regularly throughout the course of the academic year, through the receptions, the Preceptor Program, and a number of other the law school initiatives designed to connect students and the practicing bar more closely together.”
