Ways to help with Hurricane Irene disaster relief

The American Red Cross has provided Elon University with information on ways the community can respond to devastation caused by Hurricane Irene.

Most of the donations that are going through the national site will come back to North Carolina. However, if members of the Elon University community want to ensure that donation stays in state they should donate directly to the Piedmont Carolina Chapter.

Information was provided to the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement.

The Piedmont Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross is accepting donations at:
PO Box 875
Burlington, NC 27216

Please designate your donation to the N.C. Hurricane Fund. They will accept cash or check.

In addition, Elon Volunteers! is sponsoring Blood Drives on campus on Oct. 5 and 6.

Here’s how your immediate gift will help:

$40 can supply hot meals for a family of 4.
$50 can buy 4 days of baby supplies like diapers, wipes and formula.
$100 can buy clean-up kits for 5 families whose homes have been damaged (including a mop, broom, trash bags and cleaning supplies).

At the height of the storm, Red Cross operated or supported nearly 500 shelters with more than 27,000 residents from North Carolina to New England. Relief operations are ongoing in more than a dozen coastal states.
